Warm Water is a work by Alex Sheriff that began as an unassuming puddle and became a slow-growing pool, drawing from sources like science textbooks, storybook fiction, personal notes/studies, experimental writings, poems and more. Now organized simply as an art book, the material all thematically tied to warm water (as in the liquid, yes,) gives insight into an artistic practice and fluid, meandering process.

The Anthropocene

Stand on my own two feet like an Australopithecus,
Opposable thumbs unafraid to sway the fate of Maximus.
The brain named itself when it got thicc on ridiculous.
Then the new kids on the block caused apocalyptic accidents.

The Tardigrade

There once was a creature called tardigrade,
Portrayed in the colour of marmalade.
A steep temperature rise,
For most all meant demise,
But meant nothing for those who’d known harder days.

There still is a creature called tardigrade
Who thrives while we die at alarming rates.
When the temperature drops,
Many freeze like ice blocks,
But it breezes on by in the partial shade.

There will be a creature called tardigrade
Far away on an asteroid-cum-chartered plane.
All intact, alive still
In the black vaccuum’s chill,
All immortals are dealt a hard card to play.

They’re always survivors, the tardigrades.
Stubborn like stubble, post-barber shave.
Never flinch from the knife,
Eight arms swim them through life,
In a way that’s opposed to what martyrs say.
